When can I perform Hajj?
In Islam, as we work with a lunar calendar (as opposed to the Gregorian calendar), the specific dates for Hajj vary each year. Within the Islamic calendar, Hajj is performed between 8th to 12th of Dhul Hijjah – the last month of the Islamic year.
These days Hajj pilgrims travel to Makkah by air, sea, and land during the days and weeks prior to the pilgrimage period. If you’re traveling from Ireland you are likely to fly to Saudi Arabia, touching down into Jeddah or Medina. From there you will travel with your Hajj group to Makkah.
Preparation:
Educate Yourself
Familiarize yourself with the rituals of Umrah by studying reliable sources such as the Quran, Hadith, and reputable guides.
Documentation
Ensure all necessary travel documents, including passport and visa, are up-to-date and in order.
Health and Fitness
Prioritize your health by undergoing a medical check-up and ensuring you’re physically fit for the journey.
Financial Preparation
Plan your budget meticulously, considering expenses such as travel, accommodation, meals, and miscellaneous costs.
Packing Essentials
Pack modest clothing suitable for the climate of Mecca, along with personal hygiene items and any necessary medications.
Mental Preparedness
Mentally prepare yourself for the spiritual journey, focusing on the significance and objectives of Umrah, and maintaining a positive mindset throughout the pilgrimage.
During Umrah:
Ihram
Enter the state of Ihram, the sacred state of pilgrimage, by performing the prescribed rituals and reciting the intention (niyyah) to commence Umrah.

Tawaf
Circumambulate the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction, expressing reverence and devotion to Allah.

Sa’i
Perform Sa’i, the brisk walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar’s search for water for her son, Isma’il.

Shaving or Trimming
After completing Sa’i, men should shave their heads or trim their hair, symbolizing humility and renewal.

Tahalul
Exit the state of Ihram by performing Tahalul, which includes certain restrictions being lifted, such as wearing regular clothing and engaging in marital relations.

Umrah Completed
Now that you’ve completed your Umrah, cherish the spiritual journey and reflect upon the blessings attained. May your pilgrimage bring you peace, fulfillment, and spiritual growth.
Post-Umrah:

Reflect and Pray
Take time to reflect on your journey and express gratitude for the opportunity to perform Umrah. Engage in additional prayers and supplications for yourself and your loved ones.
